1. Perhentian Islands – A Slice of Tropical Paradise
Our adventure hunting for the best Malaysian Islands began with the Perhentian Islands, a haven for crystal-clear waters and powdery white sand. Located off the coast of Terengganu, the Perhentians consist of two main islands: Perhentian Besar (Big Perhentian) and Perhentian Kecil (Small Perhentian). We opted for Perhentian Kecil, which is known for its laid-back backpacker vibe and stunning snorkeling spots.
The highlight? Swimming alongside sea turtles and blacktip reef sharks! The marine life here is truly magical, and we spent hours exploring the vibrant coral reefs. The island has no cars, just sandy paths leading to hidden beaches. At night, the beach bars came alive with fire shows and relaxed vibes, making it the perfect balance of adventure and tranquility.
2. Langkawi – The Island of Legends and Luxury
Our stay at The Frangipani Langkawi Resort & Spa was all about relaxation, nature, and beachfront bliss and it is definitely in the top five Malaysian Islands. Nestled along the golden sands of Pantai Tengah, this eco-friendly resort offered us the perfect balance of comfort and sustainability.
From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed by lush gardens, swaying coconut trees, and the soothing sound of waves just steps away from our villa. The resort takes its commitment to the environment seriously, with rainwater harvesting, solar panels, and even a saltwater pool—something we truly appreciated.
Speaking of pools, we split our time between the main pool and the outdoor jacuzzi, both offering a serene escape from the midday heat. But honestly, nothing compared to having direct beach access. Whether it was morning walks along the shore or watching the sunset paint the sky in fiery hues, the beachfront location was a dream.
Breakfast was another highlight—fresh tropical fruits, local Malaysian delights, and made-to-order omelets. We especially loved the outdoor dining area, where we could enjoy our meal with a sea breeze.
The Frangipani Resort is perfect for those who want a peaceful retreat away from the busier parts of Langkawi. It’s not a flashy, ultra-luxury resort, but what it lacks in extravagance, it makes up for with charm, sustainability, and a stunning natural setting. If you’re looking for a relaxing beachfront escape with an eco-conscious touch, this place is definitely worth considering.
3. Penang – A Foodie’s Paradise with a Cultural Twist
Next, we made our way to Penang, an Malaysian islands famous for its rich history and mind-blowing street food. George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, felt like stepping into a living museum, with its charming shophouses, vibrant murals, and hidden alleyways waiting to be explored.
We spent our days wandering through Little India and Chinatown, stopping at every chance to try the local delicacies—char kway teow, Penang laksa, and cendol were absolute musts!
A visit to Penang Hill gave us a refreshing escape from the tropical heat, with sweeping views of the island and mainland. Unlike the other islands on this list, Penang isn’t about beaches—it’s about culture, history, and, most importantly, food.
4. Pangkor Island – The Underrated Gem
Pangkor Malaysian Islands felt like Malaysia’s best-kept secret. Unlike Langkawi or Penang, Pangkor remains relatively untouched by mass tourism, and we loved the quiet, laid-back atmosphere.
We rented a motorbike to explore the island’s beaches, temples, and fishing villages. Teluk Nipah was our favorite beach—serene, with crystal-clear waters and a few local stalls selling grilled seafood.
The Dutch Fort Ruins were an interesting stop, giving us a glimpse into the island’s colonial past. But the highlight? Watching the colorful fishing boats at sunset in Pangkor Town. It was one of those moments where time just seemed to slow down.
5. Pulau Ketam – A Floating Fishing Village
Last but certainly not least, we visited Pulau Ketam ( Malaysian Islands), a completely different island experience. Unlike the tropical beaches of the other islands, Pulau Ketam is a floating fishing village near Klang, built on stilts above the water.
We strolled along the wooden walkways, observing the daily life of the local fishing communities. The charm of this island lies in its simplicity—no cars, just bicycles and small boats navigating the narrow alleys. The seafood here was unbelievably fresh, and we indulged in crab, prawns, and fish dishes straight from the ocean.
Pulau Ketam gave us a glimpse into a slower, more traditional way of life in Malaysia. It was a reminder that island adventures don’t always have to be about beaches and luxury; sometimes, cultural immersion is just as rewarding

Each of these Malaysian islands gave us a completely different experience—Perhentian for its untouched nature, Langkawi for its mix of adventure and luxury, Penang for its culture and food, Pangkor for its quiet charm, and Pulau Ketam for its unique fishing village life.
