Bukit Melawati: Our Unforgettable Day Trip Experience

Looking for an exciting day trip from Kuala Lumpur? We recently visited Bukit Melawati, and it was an adventure filled with history, stunning views, and, of course, monkeys—lots of monkeys! From cheeky macaques to the gentle silvered leaf monkeys, this trip turned out to be an unforgettable experience. Whether you’re a nature lover, a history buff, or just looking for something different to do, we highly recommend adding this spot to your Malaysia itinerary.

Our journey to Bukit Melawati started in Kuala Lumpur, and getting there turned out to be an adventure in itself!

  • By Car: The easiest and most flexible way to get there is by driving. It took us around 1.5 hours via the LATAR Expressway. Parking was available near the entrance, making it super convenient.
  • By Public Transport: Initially, we planned to take the KTM Komuter from KL Sentral to Kuala Selangor, but surprise—the train wasn’t running that day! So we quickly adapted and took a Grab car instead. Travel tip: Always check train schedules in advance!
  • By Tour Package: If you prefer hassle-free travel, plenty of tours offer day trips that include Bukit Melawati, firefly watching, and seafood dinners. “Book Here”

Bukit Melawati isn’t just about monkeys. It’s packed with history! Once a strategic fortress during the Sultanate of Selangor era, the hill still has remnants of old cannons, a lighthouse, and the Royal Mausoleum

Meeting the Silvered Leaf Monkeys

We were most excited to meet the famous silvered leaf monkeys—and they did not disappoint! These gentle creatures with gray fur and calm personalities stole our hearts. One of the cutest surprises? Baby silvered leaf monkeys are bright orange! It was amazing to see them up close.

The Cheeky Long-Tailed Macaques

While the silvered leaf monkeys were polite, the long-tailed macaques were a different story! These mischievous little guys were always on the lookout for snacks. One even tried to grab a phone! Travel tip: Hold onto your belongings because these guys are sneaky!

Since we wanted to explore more of Kuala Selangor, we decided to stay overnight. Here are three places we considered:

  1. De Palma Hotel Kuala Selangor ($$) – Comfortable rooms, a swimming pool, and a relaxing atmosphere.
  1. Padi Sentral Homestay ($) – A cozy, budget-friendly option surrounded by beautiful paddy fields.
  1. Sun Inns Hotel Kuala Selangor ($) – A no-frills, affordable hotel close to Bukit Melawati and other attractions.

Food is an essential part of any road trip! Here’s where we fueled up:

  1. Bask Bear Coffee – Before heading up the hill, we stopped here for burgers, sandwiches, and chocolate chip drinks. Gotta have energy for monkey encounters!
  1. River View Seafood Restaurant – After a long day, we indulged in fresh seafood with stunning river views. Perfect for sunset lovers!
  1. Mamak Stall (Local Eatery) – A must-try! We grabbed roti canai, nasi lemak, and teh tarik—the perfect local experience before heading back.

Our Bukit Melawati adventure was full of surprises—some planned, some unexpected, but all incredibly fun! From the beautiful scenery to the friendly (and sometimes mischievous) monkeys, this trip reminded us why we love exploring Malaysia.

So if you’re ever in Kuala Lumpur and looking for a unique day trip, make sure Bukit Melawati is on your list. Have you been there before? Let us know about your experience in the comments!
